Retired and older volunteers in the Senior Volunteer Program are provided with insurance coverage, transportation reimbursement, and in some cases, meals.
The Arc of South Florida
is a local chapter of The Arc, one of the largest volunteer organizations in the United States, founded in 1953 by a group of concerned parents. This organization serves more than 1,000 citizens of Miami-Dade County with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Although it is still governed by volunteers through its Board of Directors, The Arc of South Florida has become an important community agency, offering a variety of programs and services that affect hundreds of participants, their families, and the community every day. The Arc of South Florida is committed to Title VI of Civil Rights and to ensuring that no person is excluded from participating in its services or denied the benefits of its services because of race, color, or national origin.To celebrate National Volunteer Month, United Way Miami has organized a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout April. These are powered by VolunteerMiami, Miami-Dade's central community service center that offers volunteer opportunities to people who are passionate about making an impact. The Seniors Who Serve Volunteer awards program honors elderly residents for their exceptional volunteer service in Miami-Dade County. More than 1,000 retired and veteran volunteers from the volunteer program serve 79 agencies and organizations in Miami-Dade County. The month-long celebration will culminate with the second Volunteer Day in Miami on April 23rd when more than 100 volunteers will gather to pack and distribute much needed supplies to more than 700 families in Miami-Dade County. Volunteer organizations have a tremendous influence on the community in Miami-Dade County.
They provide essential services to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as elderly residents. They also offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for those who are passionate about making a difference. Through these initiatives, they are able to provide much needed supplies to families in need and honor elderly residents for their outstanding volunteer service.
